A Little About Us
Barely used pets is not your typical shelter or rescue home. Our environment offers a free-roaming society where the dogs are not kenneled all day but can roam and run freely within a confined, fenced area. Our residents can walk inside and outside as weather permits. All of our dogs are socialized and assessed daily.
Our Routine for the Animals
This environment aids in the transition from shelter to home when the dog(s) are adopted. Each dog is kenneled at night with cots, dog beds, and toys. When a potential adopter visits, they can see how each dog interacts with other dogs, both larger and smaller, as well as how a dog responds to meeting new people. We have also recently added a cat area to our shelter. Visit our facility to see for yourself the difference it makes.
Connie Smith Founder/Director
Barely Used Pets has been a dream come true for our founder Connie Smith. As a former humane agent for Champaign County, Connie saw the need for a rescue for unwanted and stray dogs and cats.
In January 2011, the nonprofit Barely Used Pets was founded and in just a few short years, outgrew the horse barn where it was started. In October 2015 a new facility was built. Connie’s dream of an open rescue where the dogs could be out to play and socialize was now a reality.
In our first month at our new location, 18 adoptions were processed and in 2019, 1045 dogs and cats found their forever homes thanks to Connie Smith and her dream.
